About Goshin-Ryu Martial Arts & Fitness Studio

At Goshin-Ryu Martial Ars and Fitness Studio you will learn Shotokan Karate. We are dedicated to providing our members with elite martial arts instruction. We are also committed to helping you develop the attitudes and behaviors required to reach BLACK BELT EXCELLENCE - in all areas of life. Our goal is for all our students to become focused, self-disciplined and confident individuals who have the utmost respect for themselves and others.

With well over a hundred years of collective experience, our instructors teach a comprehensive curriculum grounded in the traditional martial art of Shotokan Karate. The focus, however, is on improving the overall being, rather than teaching someone "how to fight." In truth, we teach our students "how not to fight." Our course of study includes stretching exercises, a proven aid in long-term health maintenance, self-defense - including kicking, punching, joint locks, pressure points, grappling, and more.

What does this all mean to you?

Our training is perfect for men, women and children starting as young as four years of age, through adults who are well into their sixties and beyond. Over the years, our students have told us, "it is not just a martial art school - it is a life-skill institute." What they like most about Goshin Ryu Martial Arts & Fitness Studio is that we blend the traditions, history and physical disciplines of the past with modern concepts and principles of the present. We are a Family Martial Art Center - where the past meets the present to give our students life-skills unmatched anywhere in our area.

Head Instructor Shihan Luis A. Ruiz

Head Instructor Shihan Luis Ruiz

Shihan Luis Ruiz was born in Manhattan, lived in Brooklyn, New York for the first eight years of his life, and then went to live in Puerto Rico with his family. His older brother, who at the time was in the Dominican Republic studying Shorinji-Ryu Karate, inspired Luis to begin his martial arts quest. Later, when his brother joined the family in Puerto Rico, he became Luis’s sensei (karate instructor) teaching him Shorinji-Ryu Karate. Luis' brother had a passion for karate, and taught him (among other things) that there was no virtue in being better than others, that the real virtue was for him to tomorrow, be better than he was today.

His first outside and official instructor was Tae-Kwon-Do Master Tan in Isabella Puerto Rico. Luis trained for some time before deciding that this style was not what he wanted. He then moved on to Kung-fu (Choy Lay-Fut) with Sifu Jose Ramirez. Still not finding what his brother was bragging about, he moved on to Boxing - where he spent almost no time at all. Finally, in a tournament held in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, he met Sensei Wilfredo Herrera. He had no idea how this man was about to change his life.

spacerSensei Wilfredo Herrera was training in Puerto Rico under Master Eddie Cardona, who was also a member of Master Vincent Cruz’s organization (ISKA) under Nishiyama Sensei. Shihan Luis began his training in Shotokan Karate-Do with Sensei Wilfredo Herrera & Eddie Cardona. He was immediately impressed by the dedication, discipline, control, and other incredible qualities they had. Shihan Luis loved karate with a passion. He would spend countless hours before and after his scheduled classes training. He would also train in the park at night. Sensei Herrera taught him that the sky was the limit. He never trained anywhere else while he was in Puerto Rico, and in return for his loyalty, they gave him their best.

Shihan Luis earned his way to a brown belt first kyu under Wilfredo Herrera. He was tested for this belt under Wilfredo, and the Funakoshi Shotokan Karate Association during a visit from Master Kenneth Funakoshi to Puerto Rico. Shortly after receiving his brown belt, he decided to join the Army reserve where he was sent to Saint Louis Missouri for basic and other additional training. He was then sent to Aguadilla, Puerto Rico to serve his time. He participated in law enforcement operations in San Juan Puerto Rico, where many reservists risked their lives to stop crime in drug ridden neighborhoods. Shihan Luis returned to New York in search of a better life. Once he established himself with a regular job, he found a Shotokan Karate School in Queens where the equivalent of his Brown Belt rank was honored. He trained with Sensei Jose Jordan, a Member of the U.S.A. Karate team and a student of Master Thomas (La Puppet) Carroll. Shihan Luis describes training with Sensei Jordan as one of the best experiences of his karate life.

Having moved from Brooklyn to the Bronx, he was unable to travel to continue his training with Sensei Jordan. After a couple of months of living in the Bronx, he was introduced to Shihan Moises Dela Cruz, also a student of Master Thomas La Puppet and decided to train with him.

Shihan Luis continues to train and has joined the Japan Shotokan Karate Association (JSKA) under Abe Sensei & the World Union Shotokan Association, where he received his Yondan (fourth degree,) & Godan (fifth degree) black belts.

Shihan Luis Ruiz currently holds a fifth degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate-Do. He is a member of the U.S.A. National Karate Federation and is a U.S.A. & Dominican Republic National & international Pan American Karate Federation official.

Shihan Luis is also a ten time regional champion, eight time national champion, and two time International U.S. Open world champion. He has won over two-hundred trophies, one-hundred-fifty medals, and numerous other awards in local tournaments. He was member of the 1985 Puerto Rico Jr. Karate Team. He helped Sensei Jose Confidente train the Dominican Karate team in the U.S.A. which attended the Dominican Games in 2006. His latest accomplishment was winning the Gold Medal at the U.S. Open World Karate Tournament In Las Vegas on April 5th, 2012.

Shihan Luis owns two schools in Brooklyn, has produced over thirty-three U.S. National Champions, has trained seven U.S. Team Members, and has helped several members of the U.S. team to improve their kumite & kata skills.

Shihan Luis lives in Brooklyn, New York with his wife and four boys, and has a daughter that lives in Florida. He still carries the Shotokan Karate values as they was taught to him in the beginning.

In addition, Shihan Luis is the;
